CHARITY RESPONSE TO REVIEW:
The Lupus Foundation of Minnesota strongly believes in accountability and transparency and supports the governing principles of the Charities Review Council’s Accountability Standards. Fundraising events and activities sponsored by the organization that involve financial contributions from donors have consistently met and exceeded council standards for use of funds. However, the foundation also relies on in-kind donations of used items, collected through a pick-up service, to support programs, research and operations within the organization. This distinct aspect of the organization’s fundraising efforts has an increased associated cost which has impacted our over-all ‘use of funds’ percentage as is reflected in our review. It should be noted that LFM receives revenue based on the estimated fair market value of in-kind items donated through the pick-up service, and that the ultimate realized value of any donated item is much less precise to estimate than that of a financial contribution. The foundation welcomes requests for further information about this or any other aspect of the foundation’s fundraising or program service efforts. It is critical to note that management expenses within the foundation continue to remain low at only 14% of total operating expenses. The Foundation makes every effort to expend the majority of revenue on program services and is dedicated to improving the lives of those impacted by lupus through the provision of direct service, public education and funding research. For details on these programs or to learn more about what LFM is accomplishing in Minnesota, please see our web site at: www.lupusmn.org.
