Board Orientation & Assessment

Board Orientation

When starting a new job, orientation and training are important components to provide you with the information necessary to be a successful employee. Likewise, regular reviews also enhance effectiveness by evaluating past performance. So it shouldn’t be a surprise that newly elected board members benefit from orientation and evaluation as well.

Timely orientation of new elected members of the board helps to ensure that the volunteers are engaged participants and effective leaders of the organization. Without an understanding of his or her responsibilities or the mission, activities and goals of the organization, the new member will be unable to make informed decisions on behalf of the organization. A lack of preparation may also lead to disengagement, since the member may feel unprepared or unaware of what is expected of him or her.

The practice of having the board conduct regular self-assessments is another crucial component for a nonprofit's sucess. By having the board take time to reflect on and evaluate its effectiveness each year and its capacity to govern, the organization can more effectively plan for the future and manage the succession of leadership.
