Do you need help discovering ideas to help youth give their time, talent and treasure and to become great and smart givers? Listed below are some ideas we've generated to help you encourage youth to develop a philanthropic spirit:
- If you know teachers or youth workers, encourage them to visit the Great Givers web site. They can download the curriculum and provide us with valuable feedback as we expand the program.
- When you make a contribution to a charity, ask your children or grandchildren to help you research the organization. You can also encourage them to make a small monetary gift of their own. If your child receives a monthly allowance, perhaps he or she could give a portion of it to a worthwhile charity.
- If you volunteer at an organization, invite your children or grandchildren to volunteer with you. Through your actions and encouragement, they can learn about the organization, its mission and programs, and why you are committed to that cause.
- Make a personal connection between charitable giving and what’s going on in your child’s life. For example, if a classmate has been diagnosed with diabetes, your child could make a small contribution to an organization helping those affected by that disease. Likewise, if a family pet dies, you could involve your child when making a contribution to your local humane society.
- During the holiday season, encourage your children and grandchildren to think of ways to give, not just receive. Some families volunteer to serve meals to those who are homeless. (Because many shelters and kitchens are swamped by volunteers in late November and December, consider making a commitment for January and beyond). Other families research a worthwhile charity together and then make contributions to it individually. You can make year-end giving projects as much a tradition as exchanging gifts.
- Support Great Givers with a contribution to the Charities Review Council or by connecting us with new sources of potential funding.
