CHARITY RESPONSE TO REVIEW: Founded in 1939, the Minnesota Medical Foundation (MMF) is the oldest of four foundations recognized by the University of Minnesota’s Board of Regents. It is an independent tax-exempt charitable organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS Code that is governed by its own board of trustees.
Over the last five years (fiscal years 2003 through 2007), MMF has raised $287.3 million—or an average of $57.5 million annually—in support of the University of Minnesota Medical School, School of Public Health, Cancer Center, and related units in the University’s Academic Health Center. In doing so, it manages more than 2,500 funds that support academic programs, research, faculty positions, student scholarships, facilities and equipment purchases, and more. Contributions come from a number of generous benefactors—an average of more than 22,000 donors a year during FY 2003–2007—including members of the community, alumni, corporations, foundations, and community organizations. |
