CHARITY RESPONSE TO REVIEW: We thank the Charity Review Council for their support, and for helping tell our story. Basic Needs Inc. of South Washington County wants the community to know Stone Soup Thrift Shop is here to help them.
We are blessed with the generous support of volunteers and donated goods. Funding for our programs comes from store sales, individual contributions, and foundation grants. During these difficult economic times households with no income or limited resources shop at our store, benefiting from the fine quality of the goods they are given, or purchase at very low prices.
During 2007:
Sales were $105,729 and $45,636 was donated to support expenses of $138,064, serving 900 individuals, and many other customers who shopped to stretch their budgets.
Stone Soup provided goods worth $30,334 to 798 individuals (385 children & 413 adults) and to churches and community organizations at no cost to them. From 1998 through 2007, $144,175.00 worth of goods were distributed at no cost to 3,404 individuals (1964 children & 1440 adults) and to the Women’s Shelter, the Community, Missions and Churches.
Staff: (2 FTE & 4 PTE) supervised 104 youth and adults, while they worked 2,993 hours of court ordered Community Services. From 1998 through 2007, 1,032 youth and adults worked 24,735 hours.
Volunteers: (75 persons) contributed 5,675 hours of time. (From 1998 through 2007, 514 persons, volunteered 25,611 hours.)
From 1998 through 2007 the value of the Community Service and Volunteer time at $6.15 per hour was $309,628.
Washington County Senior Work Program placed 5 seniors in the store for training and work experience.
The store is committed to recycling and continues to seek new ways to process damaged or unsold items. From 2004 thru 2007, 8,333 large bags of clothing were recycled. Unusable leather goods and shoes weighing 3,133 lbs. were reprocessed by a local recycling company for use in absorbents for oil spills.
