MISSION
St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is the premier pediatric cancer research center. Its mission is to find cures for children with catastrophic illness through research and treatment. The hospital is unique in that it is the first and only institution dedicated to the sole purpose of conducting basic and clinical research regarding catastrophic childhood diseases. St. Jude has the only National Cancer Institute-funded cancer center devoted solely to pediatric cancer. St. Jude has treated children from all 50 states and around the world. No child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. St. Jude is staffed by some of the most prominent physicians in the world. The medical and scientific staff published more than 500 articles in academic journals in 2006, more than any other pediatric cancer research center in the United States. St. Jude is supported by private contributions from individuals, grants and corporations.

    CHARITY RESPONSE TO REVIEW:
Armed with its achievements to date and the promise of new scientific approaches, findings and technologies, St. Jude stands poised to transform the landscape of pediatric catastrophic disease treatment and research. St. Jude’s long-term vision is bold: - To increase cure rates in the United States from 70% to over 90% for the major forms of pediatric cancer - To dramatically reduce acute and long-term morbidity associated with pediatric cancer treatment - To lead the way in pediatric cancer prevention and control - To advance research and treatment of specific, non-malignant hematological diseases (e.g., sickle cell disease) and pulmonary infectious diseases. With broad input from faculty, staff and administrative leadership, St. Jude has developed a strategic plan that is designed to ensure that substantial and measurable progress is made toward achieving these goals. The plan is predicated on four imperatives for St. Jude; that it: - Be a national and international leader in the research and treatment of selected pediatric catastrophic diseases - Capitalize upon its unique attributes and capabilities to achieve the greatest possible impact - Construct its plan to ensure effective and efficient use of its financial resources - Define clear metrics of success. 5,100 patients – Research findings at St. Jude are freely shared with the global medical community. For that reason, experts believe that every life saved at St. Jude means thousands of lives saved around the world.
