Take Spring Cleaning on the Road: Donate a Vehicle to Charity
Car2
Spring is in the air. Have you caught the spring cleaning bug yet? If you are planning to throw open stuffy closets, weed through forgotten belongings and haul rarely used items away for donation, don’t forget to head out to the garage and consider donating an unused vehicle to charity.

Charities benefit from a donated vehicle in a variety of ways. A charity will most likely sell the vehicle and use the proceeds for programs; however, some will fix the car and donate it to a family in need or use it for auto repair training.

Donating your vehicle involves more than just making a phone call, having it towed, and taking a tax write-off. Don't get taken for a ride. Here’s a handy checklist to help you make a smart giving choice and make the greatest difference with your gift.

    • Verify the charity.
    • Ask the charity how the donated vehicle will be used. How the organization uses your donated vehicle determines the amount of your tax deduction.
    • Find out if your vehicle is going directly to the charity or through an intermediary.
    • Find out if the charity will pick up your vehicle or if you have to deliver it to the charity.
    • Transfer the vehicle title in person.
    • Maintain records of your donation if you plan to deduct the donation of a vehicle in determing your income tax.

Search the Council's database of reviewed charities with automobile donation programs. Reviewed charities have voluntarily participated in the Council’s Accountability Wizard review process that measures organizational practices in public disclosure, governance, financial activity and fundraising. Review results help donors determine the integrity and accountability of the charities they intend to support.
