SCRA organized a 17-day “Be Moved by the River” event that provided paddling and stewardship opportunities from the river’s headwaters to its confluence with the Mississippi River. The event included 674 paddler days on the river, and events featuring education, music and arts. We estimate that 47,500 people received information about the St. Croix through this effort, with tens of thousands more seeing press coverage generated in river communities across the basin. SCRA launched a new water-focused project with forestry groups and completed groundwork on a basin-wide initiative to increase coordination of conservation investments. With multiple jurisdictions fragmenting work on St. Croix water quality, it has been a significant accomplishment to bring interests to the table and achieve a shared commitment to implementing a more efficient and coordinated conservation system. We succeeded in leveraging support for both the forest-focused and basinwide efforts through government grant programs. As planned we also effectively oversaw early implementation of the phosphorous reduction projects we selected in 2010. Working with a team of partners, SCRA completed a Lower Apple River Action Plan that lays out detailed steps needed to protect and restore this important St. Croix tributary. We convened a wide range of partners for this effort, including Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Martell’s Landing education center, Town of Somerset officials and citizens, National Park Service, St. Croix County, University of Wisconsin Extension and the St. Croix Basin Water Resources Planning Team. As planned we also coordinated regular meetings of the St. Croix Conservation Collaborative.
Current Goals
1. Oversee completion and assess and publicize the results from four state funded projects to reduce phosphorous pollution to the St. Croix. 2. Begin implementing the Lower Apple River action plan to protect lands and reduce water pollution. 3. Continue coordinating the St. Croix Conservation Collaborative and support priority land protection efforts. 4. Convene work groups on collaborative St. Croix water protection efforts, completing initial assessments and developing work plans for involved agencies and partners. 5. Lead a 2012 River Awareness week with a goal of engaging at least 1,200 people in stewardship work and providing information to an additional 10,000 citizens. 6. Continue to function as a “go to” organization for the St. Croix River and its basin
