The amount of donated, purchased, and government commodity food distributed by Channel One increased over the previous year. This food is distributed to over 160 non-profit feeding agencies across our region that provide food to individuals and families who are hungry or at risk of hunger. We also provide free groceries to about 4,000 different households each month in the Channel One Supplemental Food Shelf. The Channel One Backpack Program provides free child-friendly food to nearly 1,400 Olmsted County students each week. These programs greatly impact the health and well-being of thousands of individuals by enabling them to meet their nutrition needs on a consistent basis.
Channel One Regional Food Bank plans to continue to feed all who seek our assistance. We plan to increase our fresh produce acquisition by another 300,000 pounds, and to increase the number of students being served through the Backpack Program to 1,500 each week. Channel One's warehouse is full to capacity, and in order to continue to grow our food programs and increase efficiencies, we are planning to build an addition onto the warehouse, expanding the cooler and freezer, and adding a second repack room for sorting and repacking food product.
