Accomplishments
In 2010 our direct service programs served 745 people in our employment programs, distributed 287,938 lbs of healthy, culturally specific food to 1,913 individuals through our food shelf, worked with caregivers to ensure support of our elders through our Eldercare program, and served 74 new people in our social services program in 2010. In addition to our direct services CAPI strives to create health and gender equity in our communities. To promote health equity in 2010 CAPI provided healthy living programming in two public housing units to encourage healthy eating, exercise, and smoking cessation. This programming allowed CAPI staff to work with community members to become more civically engaged in their community via voicing their opinions to their housing units regarding policies and taking action to make change in their community. Through this civic engagement community members were able to implement anti-smoking policies in their buildings, start community gardens, hold an exercise class, and organize a local farmers market. In terms of gender equity work, in 2010 CAPI’s conducted most of its gender equity work through its role as the lead agency of Refugee and Immigrant Women for Change (RIWC) Coalition. One action RIWC took in 2010 included conducting a community assessment with 165 community members via 16 listening sessions. Finally, CAPI provides training across all programming to talk about social justice, civic engagement, health equity, and gender equity.
