In 2014, Cancer Legal Line provided pro bono legal services and information to 400 Minnesota cancer patients and survivors. Assitance provided included obtaining disability benefits previously denied to a client with blood cancer, providing wills and guardianship documentation for minor children for several single mothers with advanced breast cancer, and assisting with navigating employment leave and reasonable accommodation requests. Additionally, Cancer Legal Line conducted 19 group presentations on a wide range of cancer related legal issues attended by 1,786 Minnesota cancer patients, survivors, and their loved ones. Cancer Legal Line began the DDS OnCALL program for oral, head, and neck cancer patients and Minnesota's first oncology based Medical-Legal Partnership with University of Minnesota Health, focusing on blood cancer patients.
Cancer Legal Line's goals for 2015 include:
1) Continued growth of our Breast Cancer Legal Program and DDS OnCALL programs.
2) Continue our Medical-Legal Partnership with the University of Minnesota's Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit, wherein legal services are provided on-site in the clinical setting to Minnesotans with blood cancer pre-transplant. This particular population of cancer patients has an inordinately high number of legal needs accompanying their diagnosis. By creating a Medical-Legal Partnership, legal services become an integral part of the care of the whole patient, leading to better health outcomes and enhanced quality of life.
3) Create an additional Medical Legal Partnership within the Twin Cities.
